14th Meeting of the GRDC Steering Committee, 01 July 2021 (virtual)

The 14th meeting of the GRDC Steering Committee Meeting was held virtually on 1 July 2021 from 09:00 – 12:45 CEST.

GRDC presented to the Steering Committee the current status of the Global Runoff Database, the newly developed download portal and a range of updated and new data products.

Since the previous Steering Committee Meeting in June 2017, the river discharge database was migrated to a new data management system. After evaluation by WMO, GRDC discharge data are now included in the “WMO Catalogue for Climate Data”.

A download portal, operational since July 2020, was developed for more efficient access to GRDC discharge data, which are now offered in a range of different data formats including WaterML 2.0 and NetCDF.

Geospatial data products such as the “Major River Basins of the World” and “WMO Basins and Sub-Basins” have been updated using HydroSHEDS, a higher resolution global hydrographic mapping product.

The “Freshwater Fluxes into the World's Oceans” data product was recalculated on an extended dataset from 1901 to 2016 provided by the water balance model WaterGAP. Information is now accessible via a web application, which also integrates previous versions of GRDC freshwater flux calculations.

WMO presented the role of hydrology in the new structure of WMO. Data centres operating under the auspices of WMO, such as GRDC can constructively contribute to the WMO adopted “Earth Systems Approach” which looks at the planet as a whole, linking atmosphere, ocean and hydrosphere, the terrestrial realm, the cryosphere and even the biosphere.
