The GRDC - a reliable partner

GRDC operates under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). This setting confers on the Centre an identity with regard to the United Nations system which is essential for international recognition. The Hydrological and Meteorological Services of the Member states of WMO are constant and reliable partners of GRDC.

The Centre is a German contribution to the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS). The Hydrology and Water Resources Programme (HWRP) in WMO is the professional contact partner for the Centre. The Centre is funded by the government of the Federal Republic of Germany. It was formally established at the Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG) in Koblenz, Germany, in 1988. The activities of the Centre are monitored by an international Steering Committee which provides advice on the data and information policy, data acquisition strategies, service provision and product development, and the implementation of future tasks.

GRDC contributes to a number of international research programmes like HWRP, WCRP's Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX), the Climate and Cryoshpere Project (CliC), and to international data management initiatives like the Global Terrestrial Network for Hydrology (GTN-H), supported by WMO, GCOS, GTOS and ICSU. Through its contribution to GTN-H, GRDC is linked to the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS).
