Ecological connectivity of waterways: consultancy, research, quality management

Fish and other organisms cannot move freely through most German waterways. To restore the natural life cycle of migrating fish, upstream migration needs to be facilitated at many locks. However, restoring ecological connectivity is a difficult task. In close cooperation with BAW, BfG provides consultancy services to BMVI and WSV, which focuses on prioritizing, implementing and guaranteeing the quality management of measures.

During their life time, many aquatic organisms (fish or invertebrates) migrate between different regions of the upper and lower reaches of rivers. However, in impounded rivers, the ecological connectivity is often impeded or highly limited. For fish and other organisms, many locks present an insurmountable obstacle. Therefore, WSV needs to increase the ecological connectivity of a high number of locks. The Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG) and the Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute (BAW) support WSV in planning, implementing, and guaranteeing the quality management of the necessary measures.
