Value of discharge data for global hydrological modeling / Petra Döll and Martin Hunger, Institute of Physical Geography, Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany.
Discharge data support global-scale freshwater assessments because they allow model tuning and validation. Three examples regarding hydrological modeling with the WaterGAP Global Hydrology Model WGHM show the value of discharge data as provided by GRDC. To support joint usage of discharge and satellite data in hydrological modeling, very recent recharge data should be preferentially acquired by GRDC. Besides, data on discharge upstream and downstream of surface water bodies, and naturalized outflows of reservoirs, would be a useful addition to the GRDC data set.
