The development of a hydrological database, the European Water Archive (EWA), has been a central feature at the inception of the EURO-FRIEND-Water Programme in 1985. EWA is now one of the most comprehensive hydrological archives in Europe, containing long-term daily flow data and catchment information from more than 4000 river gauging stations in 30 countries.

EURO-FRIEND-Water Project Group 1 had formal responsibilities for coordinating data acquisition and dissemination to FRIEND-Water researchers. The Global Runoff Data Centre (GRDC), Federal Institute of Hydrology, Koblenz, Germany, hosts the European Water Archive. Data acquisition as part of the European FRIEND-Water programme and the maintenance of a separate EWA database became increasingly difficult to justify, considering the limited number of data requests. GRDC embarked on a strategy of integrated data acquisition, including EWA data, and all supplied data are now been included in the GRDC database.

At the October 2014 EURO-FRIEND-Water meeting in Montpellier it was concluded that the EWA will no longer be updated and will be “frozen” at its current state. Data providers should be encouraged to provide data to the GRDC instead. It was decided to request permission from the data providers to include EWA stations and associated data into the GRDC database and to integrate the EWA stations into the GRDC database flagging them as EWA affiliated stations.

Data can be ordered for EURO-FRIEND-Water project purposes free of charge according to GRDC data policy and by following the GRDC data ordering procedures.
