13th Meeting of the GRDC Steering Committee, 22 - 23 June 2017.

The 13th meeting of the GRDC Steering Committee Meeting has taken place from 22 – 23 June 2017, Koblenz, Germany.

The GRDC presented to the Steering Committee the current status of the Global Runoff Database and a steady upward trend in information and data requests.

Since the previous Steering Committee Meeting data could be updated for more than 3300 stations in the GRDC database. The total number of stations in the GRDB has increased from January 2015 to January 2017 from 9011 to 9323. The European Water Archive (EWA) and the Southern African FRIEND-Water database, both specialised databases for the UNESCO-FRIEND-Water community, have been integrated in to the database and made available to the research community. River discharge data collected in the Baltic Sea Experiment (BALTEX) within the Global Energy and Water Exchanges Project (GEWEX) over the last 20 years has been moved from SMHI to the GRDC to become an integrated part of the Global Runoff Database.

The overall data and information requests per year increased from 410 to more than 435 with the requests for GIS layers remaining stable at around 70 requests per year.

The GRDC reported on the activities within the OGC/WMO Hydrology Domain Working Group and the contributions to the WMO Information System (WIS) and the GEOSS Common Infrastructure. Ongoing negotiations with the National Hydrological Services led to a confirmed set of currently about 300 stations from which the discharge data can be made available online. The released timeseries of monthly discharge are provided in the OGC WaterML2 standard format and offered using a standardised OGC Webservice.

GRDC has been tasked to enhance online provision of discharge data, to continue the activities on standardisation of hydrological data exchange and to feedback the information to the WMO Commission for Hydrology (CHy).

Thank you again for your contributions.
