From source to mouth – a sediment balance of the River Rhine

The first overall sediment balance of the River Rhine – this is the objective of a new BfG research project. This balance considers the origin, amount, and fate of the sediments transported by the river. This knowledge will improve the possibilities to control the extraction of material by dredging or to supply bedload material etc. Moreover, it helps to assess changes in the river morphology caused by climate change. Our continent is traversed by major rivers and canals and is surrounded by wide coastal waters. They form a system of waterways that crosses national boundaries and provides links between countries. These waterways are a valuable asset for all people living in Europe. Comprehensive and sustainable development of their manifold use options requires thinking and action beyond national frontiers.

As a scientific institution ranking as a supreme federal agency, the BfG is responsible for the German waterways in federal ownership. In this position it has a central mediating and integrating function.
