River continuity in navigable waterways: Consulting, research, quality assurance

Most of our navigable waterways do not allow the unhindered migration of fish or other aquatic organisms and the natural transport of sediment. Many impoundment weirs must be equipped with upstream fish passes so that migratory species can follow their natural life cycles again. The restoration of the river continuity in navigable waterways is a challenging task. The BfG advises – in close cooperation with the BAW – the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMVBS) and the Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) regarding the priority of actions, their implementation, and in matters of quality assurance. The German Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG)

Our continent is traversed by major rivers and canals and is surrounded by wide coastal waters. They form a system of waterways that crosses national boundaries and provides links between countries. These waterways are a valuable asset for all people living in Europe. Comprehensive and sustainable development of their manifold use options requires thinking and action beyond national frontiers.

As a scientific institution ranking as a supreme federal agency, the BfG is responsible for the German waterways in federal ownership. In this position it has a central mediating and integrating function.
