Physical river-quality studies

In the past decades considerable efforts and funds have been invested to build wastewater-treatment plants in order to improve the water quality in our rivers. However, it soon became obvious that the biocoenotic condition of waters (i.e. their function as habitats) is also determined by the structure of the riverbed, the banks and the riparian environs. The BfG has developed a method to assess the physical quality of water bodies and tested it on the River Elbe in a joint German-Czech project.
