German federal waterways – the BfG's responsibility

Our country's major rivers and coastal waters are lifelines that are used in many different ways. These waters provide transport routes that are both economic and environment-friendly. Their maintenance and the development of their transport function requires supra-regional and international responsibility and co-operation.

Accordingly, all inland waterways in federal ownership (large rivers, routes through lakes, and canals) that serve for the general transport of passengers and freight are controlled by the national government through the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) according to the German Waterway Act (WaStrG). The federal waterways include also the waterways in the national coastal waters.
