International Conference „Water Quality of European Transboundary Rivers – 7 Years Water Framework Directive“

By the extension of the European Union in the last years transnational river catchment regions moved into the focus of scientific investigations and political acting. Beyond the inventory of substantial water quality criteria at the beginning of the activities, effects of flood events as well as transport and fate of pollutants are today of great importance and represent a challenge both in science and policy.

Positive experiences from the Workshop on the Elbe Catchment Area in November 2005 at the UFZ in Leipzig and from the 11th Magdeburg Seminar on Waters in Central and Eastern Europe: Assessment, Protection and Management, held in Leipzig in October 2004, encouraged us to organize an internationalconference „Water Quality of European Transboundary Rivers – 7 Years Water Framework Directive“ during September 2007 in Leipzig.
